Ovidio Guzmán-López: How was El Chapo’s son arrested?

Ovidio Guzmán López, also known as “El Ratón” or “El Nuevo Ratón” (“The Mouse” or “The New Mouse”) and “El Bebé” (“The Baby”), is a prominent member of the Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal organization located in the state of Sinaloa, and a drug lord in Mexico. He is the offspring of notorious drug lord Joaqun “El Chapo” Guzmán, who was once the most sought criminal in the world and the drug lord in Mexico. Guzmán López was thought to be the head of the Sinaloa Cartel faction known as Los Chapitos, Los Menores, and/or Los Juniors.


How was El Chapo’s son arrested?

Guzmán López was taken into custody by the authorities on January 5, 2023 in Culiacán’s Jess Mara neighborhood. Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval later confirmed the reports of his arrest, saying that members of the Army, National Guard, Secretariat of National Defense, and Secretariat of the Navy had apprehended him and were successfully transporting him to Mexico City, where he was then brought to the offices of the Attorney General’s special prosecutor for organized crime. Later that afternoon, the Mexican Air Force transported him by helicopter to the Altiplano Federal Maximum Security Prison in Almoloya de Juárez.

During a news conference, Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said that Guzmán López has been requested for extradition to the United States so that he can stand trial there. However, Ebrard also mentioned that he is also being investigated by Mexican authorities for criminal activity.
