Her mother Jana wed Miroslav Navrátil in 1962, who went on to instruct her in tennis. Martina changed her name to Martina Navrátilová by adding the feminine suffix -ová to her stepfather’s name. Mirek (officially Miroslav Ubert), her father, was a ski instructor.
