Kirk S. Lippold is a former U.S. Navy officer. He was the commanding officer of the United States Navy destroyer USS Cole on October 12, 2000, when the ship was attacked and bombed by al-Qaeda terrorists during a refueling stop in the Yemeni port of Aden, killing 17 U.S. sailors.
Kirk was born on April 29, 1959 (age 63 years), in Nevada, United States of America.

Lippold graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1981. He studied systems engineering (joint command, control, and communications) from 1987 to 1989 at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, where he got his master’s degree.
He received his diplomas from the Joint Forces Staff College in 2001 and the United States Army Command and General Staff College in 1994, respectively.
