Chapin played and traveled with a number of bands from the 1940s to the 1960s, including Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra and bands led by musicians including Mike Riley, Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, and Tony Pastor. Additionally, he occasionally played with his sons Tom, Steve, and Harry Chapin, who was at the height of his fame and one of the original members of the World Hunger Year in the 1970s. He continued to play in bands well into his 80s. After leaving the band Kiss in the early 1980s, Chapin carried on lecturing and giving workshops all around the world, even instructing Peter Criss. He frequently attended percussion meetings and music trade events. The American Eagle Award, given by the National Music Council in Washington, and a lifetime achievement award from the Berklee College of Music in Boston were two awards given to Chapin in 1994 for his contributions to music and education.
