Emma Modesta Coronel was born on July 2, 1989, close to San Francisco, California, US, to cattle rancher Inés Coronel Barreras and Blanca Estela Aispuro Aispuro, who served as El Chapo’s deputy and was designated a foreign drug kingpin by the US Department of the Treasury. She was raised in the outlying Durango community of La Angostura. In Canelas, Durango, Mexico, Coronel competed in the 2007 Coffee and Guava Festival beauty contest.  Coronel celebrated Three Kings Day with her celebration, which was required by each contender. Joaqun “El Chapo” Guzmán reportedly came to Canelas for this occasion, where he reportedly met Coronel. On February 22, 2021, Coronel was taken into custody at Dulles International Airport. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s arrest warrant, the probable cause for Coronel’s arrest included evidence that he helped Guzman escape from Federal Social Readaptation Center No. 1 “Altiplano” in 2015 through bribery, helped plan another escape attempt that failed after Guzman’s extradition, and shuttled messages from Guzman to Sinaloa Cartel associates. On November 30, 2021, Coronel was given a sentence of three years in prison, followed by four years of supervised release by Judge Rudolph Contreras of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Judge Contreras did not give Coronel the four-year term that the prosecution had wanted, noting that she was still a minor when she wed Guzman and that she had accepted guilt at the time of her arrest. Emma will be released on September 13, 2023, from the Federal Medical Center in Carswell, where she is now completing her term.
