In this presentation, a strain rate-dependent cohesive zone model and related finite element model (FEM) are developed to analyze speed-dependent dynamic fracture of pipeline steels observed in recent tests. The speed-dependences of CTOA (crack tip opening angle) and energy dissipation observed in experiments are reproduced in our simulations. The FEM results showed that the strain rate-effects could be largely responsible for the observed various speed-dependent dynamic fracture phenomena of pipeline steels. The presented numerical model can be used to simulate high speed fracture of pipeline steels especially when the related experiments are difficult or too expensive.

报告人简介:

Dr. Ru is currently a Professor in department of mechanical engineering, University of Alberta,Canada. Dr. Ru received his doctorate in solid mechanics atPekingUniversity(China), and then worked in theInstituteofMechanics,ChineseAcademyof Science and held a number of visitor/research positions in several universities inItaly,USAandCanada. He joined theUniversityofAlbertain 1997 and became a Professor in 2004. Dr. Ru’s past research areas include plastic buckling of structures, mechanics of elastic inclusions, electroelastic mechanics, and some applied mathematics problems related to solid mechanics. Besides traditional areas of solid mechanics, his recent research interests include solid mechanics at micro/nano scales, cell biomechanics, and dynamic ductile fracture. Dr. Ru’s publications received more than 3700 SCI citations (without self-citations, from “Web of Science”).
