讲座摘要:Composite materials are gaining wide applications in aircraft, spacecraft, automotive and energy generation. However, their analysis still presents challenges due to the multiple scales from micro-level to the structural. For example, for analyzing the deformation of a composite structure, it should be regarded as an anisotropic body at a macroscopic scale. However, to analyze its failure or damage, one must use microscopic analysis with the representative volume elements (RVEs) considering micro cracks in the matrix and/or at fiber/matrix interfaces. Furthermore, for fabrication and processing, the molecular scale at which fiber and resin react also must be considered (i.e., atomistic modeling). This presentation will introduce an approach to multi-scale modeling of a fiber-reinforced composite considering bridging of scales. The approach is not always tightly connected in a scheme, and each scale is independently modeled. However, the results from a series of models give us a concise view of how to connect those scales and to use the composites wisely. The presentation will discuss (1) Numerical method for failure simulation of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites with spring-element model; (2) Numerical modeling of progressive damage in fiber-reinforced plastic cross-ply laminates; (3) Micromechanics of the Rate-Dependent Fracture of Discontinuous Fiber-Reinforced Plastics; (4) Periodic unit-cell simulation of transverse tensile failure in unidirectional car-bon-fiber-reinforced composites; (5) Atomistic simulation of the curing reaction of Epoxy resin.
